The project has consisted of some serious musical and mathematical thinking, as well as deep philosophical understanding of the ideas of our beloved client – Branimir Rakić. Let’s indulge into his whole sonic character in order to finally come to the world of Aleatoric.
BOUNDING
The first project that got him recognition on the local scene was Eastbound – a duo he created with his long-time friend Nikita Abrahskin. They started in 2006 and immediately got involved into pouring their dark ambiental progressive trance over many clubs in Serbia, as well as with more techno-oriented sounds.
In 2008, Eastbound launched their own radio show called “Pulseone Sessions” on Pure.FM radio, promoting local and international DJ guests. Branimir and Nikita have back in the day hosted artists such as Martin Roth,Jelly for the Babies,
V-Sag, Santiago Nino,
Sander van Doorn and others, as well as performed alongside artists such as Marshall Jefferson, Danny Way, John Deere, Storyteller and others.
In early 2009 they have also organized several 24 and 48h marathon shows dubbed “Serbia Uprising” with a showcase of the fellow Serbian DJ talents on Pure.FM, DI.fm and Beatmax radio.
With their music productions, they managed to attract attention of several labels – Silk Records, Round Triangle Progressive House Worldwide, Perceptive Recordings, Round Triangle and SENS.
In 2016, together with several close friends Branimir co-founded the novel underground “conscious clubbing”
experience - ISKLJUČI SE, focusing on creating conscious audio-visual experiences through a peer-to-peer invitation concept, at an always unknown location and with unexpected interactive installations and with specially crafted music selections and live performance for the beloved audience.
THE ALEATORIC BIRTH
As a continuation of the Eastbound project, it was time to get into some deep personal exploration. The evolution of musical direction and aims was a natural process.
Aleatoric incorporates both Branimir’s engineering sonic precision with elements of aleatory, both through the Aleatoric productions and live acts which often incorporate chance-introduced artists and collaborators. “It’s a shapeshifting band of many, with a constant in one” as Branimir likes to put it.
Another important influence is his constantly evolving vinyl collection, that spans gems collected almost exclusively “offline”, purchased from every city he visited during his travels. From local rarities like “Belgrade’s Burning” compilations, heavy R-Zone dimensions, across Gigi Masin’s ever-lasting ambient waves, it is hard to encompass all the genres and styles that Aleatoric is attracted to.
BOUNCE VS ALEATORIC
At the moments of evolution and desire to create a visual background for his ongoing and upcoming sonic projects, a spark ignited the collaboration between Bounce and Branimir. He approached us with the idea of his musical alias – Aleatoric - which carried more than just a name.
In a world full of exactness, he decided to go the way well-unknown.
A lot of inspiration for this concept is drawn from the theory of aleatoric music. But, let’s throw some knowledge for better understanding of the “aleatoric” meaning. Alea means “dice” in Latin, contributing in aleatory as the one in which some of the elements of the composition is left to chance, with the primary elements determined by the artist. The final result constantly varies in tones, durations, rhythms and dynamics. Eh?
LET’S ROLL A HYPERDICE – our PROCESS
We were asked to create a whole visual identity around the Aleatoric project, with the idea of a precise “Alea” - cube, which expands outside of its beautifully simplistic form - the hypercube, or hyperdice, as a main thinking material. In simple words, a hypercube is a 4-dimensional cube. Yes, it’s a simply very complex world, which gave us space to shoot some bouncy ideas.
This Aleatoric hero’s superpower is: seeing things from a different angle. He has also acquired the possibility of moving through space and time and changing his positions within a moment. To understand his nature completely, let’s imagine two cubes constantly moving, one inside the other. The bigger one flowing through the space and time and the smaller one revolving around its imaginary axis inside the bigger one. By constantly orbiting around their own axes, it seems to us that the smaller one wants to get out of the bigger one, only to finally understand that that is their nature and beauty, making the unique shapes together.
This Aleatoric hero’s superpower is rebelliousness. But the rebelliousness in a true, leader’s way. He doesn’t care that his surrounding is just a 2D square. Even in a 2-dimension world he manages to show and teach others about different realities, realities where squares are dancing, opening as a flower, showing off colors and shapes like a peacock. But don’t look at him as an egoistic shape, on the contrary, he does it for others and hugs his 2D brothers and sisters, showing them the endless possibilities of colors, shapes and music working together.
This Aleatoric hero’s superpower is infinity. Infinity of shapes, dimensions and finally, infinity of letters “A” shaped of his lines in various positions and dimensions. He is young and flexible. Seems a bit tender, but his strength lies within, between the visible crisp lines. He is the geometrical shaman, unobtrusive and clairvoyant leader. Not everyone can see his hypercubes, but ones that do, have the privilege of dancing within his shiny lines that orchestrate this symphony. His secret “weapon” is the crystal through which light emanates like through a prism, letting the colors flow undisturbed to the ears of the chosen ones.
THE WINNER IS SERVED!
After numerous self-surveys and mutual confirmation, it is decided to go with the final option. We nodded our head positively and dived into coloring, modifying and shaping the life of the survived hero. So, we are introducing you all the sides of the elected adventurer.
Firstly, we made him a wheel of good fortune, inspired by artistic randomness of the people of Ndebele tribe. They commuicate through colors, painting their heritage and common knowledge on the walls of their homes.
This one you can call as the mightiest and versatile one among the Transformers characters. He can adapt to any setting, viciously evolving into the notorious leader of an eclectic spacey-shuttle.
With his various sonic ammo, he has the power of a mandala, the geometry of a crazy mathematician and the attitude of the Berlin underground scene. He is the real hyper-transformer, and in all that he stays the same, Aleatoric hero.
It might not look as if he is breaking the rules, but that’s only because he makes his own rules. Yes, this is the classic all-star Aleatoric hero, and you can imagine him as Rocky Balboa or Arnold Schwarzenegger among the cubes company.
